Interview with Darcie Boleyn

Hi Darcie

Welcome to Comet Babes Books today!

Can you tell us about Wish Upon a Christmas Cake?
Wish Upon a Christmas Cake is the story of Katie Warham and the Christmas that changes her life. She’s a hardworking and independent woman who has striven to make her business Crumbtious Cakes a success. However, she has experienced pain in her past in more ways than one. When her gorgeous ex, Sam Fairfax, turns up at her family Christmas with his two young children, she finally has to face up to things she has tried to forget about for so long.

It’s a story of love, loss, family and second chances.

Can you share with us who designs the gorgeous covers for your books?
The cover came from Carina UK’s talented cover artist.

As this is your debut novel, can you tell us about your other book plans?
I recently finished my second novel and submitted it to my editor at Carina UK. It’s a story of a thirty-something mother, her three very different children, her two ex-husbands and her dreams of quitting teaching to follow a different career path.

Now I have to wait until I receive revision suggestions, which is when the really hard work begins! ;-)

Can you tell us about your writing process?
I write whenever and wherever I can, although my most productive time seems to be early morning straight after breakfast. I make a cup of tea or coffee, read over my notes and the previous scene, visualize the scene I’m about to write, then off I go!

How old were you when you started writing?
I always wanted to be an author. As a child, I read and wrote all the time. I entered short story competitions and poetry competitions. I went off to university at nineteen, then life became busy and my writing took a back seat until 2010 when I decided to try again. It took a lot of encouragement from my husband because I doubted that I could write anything ‘good enough’ to get published. However, I kept trying and eventually received the wonderful acceptance email. Since then, I haven’t stopped writing.

Are any of your characters based on people you know?
Ha ha! That would be telling…

There are elements of people I know in my writing but obviously, it’s more a blending of characteristics than basing characters on particular individuals.
However, many things that my children have said and done over the years have found their way into my stories.

Do you have a support network for your writing?
I interact with authors and bloggers on a daily basis on social media. The Carina authors are particularly supportive and I’ve made friends with some amazing book bloggers along the way too. J

What items are on your desk/where you write?
Notebooks, a dictionary, an Ipod dock, a colouring book and pencils, and folders of notes for my writing.

What's the best/worst thing about social media?
Best thing – interacting with so many interesting people from all over the world.

Worst thing – it’s a terrible distraction when I have writing to do.

Have you ever heard a strange/different story that you thought would be great in a book?
There’s a story about a bearded dragon and some crickets in my second novel. I won’t say more now, but it’s based on real events. ;-)

What do you like to do when you're not writing?
Read, walk my dogs and spend time with my husband and children.

Non book questions

Favourite holiday place?
Chamrousee in France. It’s a ski resort and it’s absolutely gorgeous. I prefer snow to sun.

Favourite food?
I don’t really have a favourite food as I like lots of things but I do love ginger as an ingredient and cherries.

What kind of music do you listen to?
I like all sorts of music and some of my favourites include Fleetwood Mac, Deftones, Queen and Frank Sinatra.

Favourite film?
Dirty Dancing, Father of the Bride and National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation – all for different reasons.

Favourite Chocolate?
Anything with ginger or cherries in!

Favourite drink?
Earl Grey tea or red wine – depending on the time… ;-)

Thank you for answering my questions!

Darcie Boleyn has a huge heart and is a real softy. She never fails to cry at books and movies, whether the ending is happy or not. Darcie is in possession of an overactive imagination that often keeps her awake at night. Her childhood dream was to become a Jedi but she hasn’t yet found suitable transport to take her to a galaxy far, far away. She also has reservations about how she’d look in a gold bikini, as she rather enjoys red wine, cheese and loves anything with ginger or cherries in it – especially chocolate. Darcie fell in love in New York, got married in the snow, rescues uncoordinated greyhounds and can usually be found reading or typing away on her laptop.
