Guest Post The Mysterious Bakery on Rue De Paris by Evie Gaughan

What They Say:

This is the magical tale of Edith Lane, who sets off to find her fortune in the beautiful city of Paris.  Fortune, however, is an unpredictable thing and Edith ends up working in a vintage bakery in the positively antique town of Compiegne.  Escaping heartache and singledom in Ireland, Edith discovers that the bakery on Rue De Paris is not exactly what it seems and that some ghosts from the past are more difficult to vanquish than others.

A heartwarming story that is sure to appeal to all the senses, The Mysterious Bakery On Rue De Paris is a mouth-watering journey to love, liberty and la vie en rose.

Writing Tips from Evie Gaugham

Now that I have two books under my belt, I can safely say that I have learned a lot about the writing process.  While every writer must find their own path and their own way of doing things, I have a few tips that I’d like to share with anyone who is starting out in their writing career.

The first and most important point that I learned, was that in order to get good at writing, you need to be willing to write some truly awful drivel at the outset.  I often think writing is like skiing; you watch other people do it and it looks so easy that you think, “I could do that!”.  But it soon becomes clear how challenging it actually is and the results can leave you frustrated and tempted to give up.  It’s completely natural; of course your first attempts are going to be clumsy, but you have to stick at it and hone your skill.  There are fantastic online resources where you can share your writing and have it critiqued, or go the old fashioned route and join a creative writing class.  Keeping a blog is also a great way to practice your writing.  I myself wrote short stories for magazines, then feature articles and eventually a novel.  So don’t expect yourself to be a literary genius from the moment you decide to become a writer – allow yourself the time to experiment and to grow.

This leads me nicely to my second point.  My very first novel, which still lies in a dusty old folder on my computer, unpublished, taught me a very valuable lesson.  It helped me to discover my writer’s voice.  When I wrote the book back in 2008, I was a huge fan of Maeve Binchey and Marian Keyes and subconsciously wrote the kind of story that I thought reflected their style.  Big mistake.  The fact is, I didn’t feel free as a writer because I was limiting myself to the kind of writing style I enjoyed reading.  But Maeve Binchey and Marian Keyes were already writing those kinds of books, imminently more successfully than I ever could, so did the world really need a mediocre imitation of something that had already been done?  That was when I realised that I needed to uncover my own writing voice, so I could interpret the story from my unique perspective, using the kind of language and style that would set me apart from other authors.  That was when I wrote my debut novel, ‘The Cross Of Santiago’.

Thirdly, structure (groan!).  I know, I know, trying to squeeze your creative juices into some kind of structure can seem like mission impossible.  However, there are certain things you can do to prevent distraction when it comes to getting words onto the page.  My golden rule is to write using a computer that doesn’t have an Internet connection.  It’s so easy to get sucked into social media and whatnot when you’re just doing some fact-checking for your novel online.  At least try and disconnect for a set amount of time so you can reach your word-count targets without that pesky Interweb interrupting you.  Also, I would have to recommend giving National Novel Writing Month a go.  Every November, the challenge is to write a novel (50,000 words) in a month.  If it sounds crazy – it is!  But it’s achievable.  In fact, ‘The Mysterious Bakery On Rue De Paris’ was born during that month and it was the most frenetic yet productive writing period I’ve ever experienced.  It taught me the value of daily word-count targets and more importantly, the ability to keep on writing every day without the gravitational pull towards constant editing.  When writing my first novel, I would edit constantly along the way, so this exercise taught me how to get the bones of the story down, before adding the ‘meat’ later.

So that’s it folks, my top three writing tips.

1. Practice makes perfect.

2.  Find your voice.
3.  Keep a routine that works for you.  Best of luck and keep writing!

About the Author

Hi, my name is Evie Gaughan.

At school, I often fancied myself as a bit of an Emily Brontë , as Wuthering Heights is one of my all-time favourite novels. However, I decided to take the long way round, which involved getting my diploma in Marketing and Social Studies, travelling abroad to France and Canada as well as the UK, working in some cool places and some not-so-cool places, meeting new people and leaving others behind, until ultimately I found my writing voice and the life experience to tell a story well.

I’m currently living in my home-town of Galway, Ireland and unlike Emily Brontë, I’m currently working on my second novel which I hope to release early next year.

Me Without You by Kelly Rimmer

What They Say:
If you enjoyed Me Before You by JoJo Moyes, One Day by David Nicholls, orThe Notebook by Nicholas Sparks – then make time for Kelly Rimmer’s stunning, heartbreaking new novelMe Without You.
A story of how love can break our hearts – and heal them.
A year ago I met the love of my life. For two people who didn’t believe in love at first sight, we came pretty close.
Lilah MacDonald – beautiful, opinionated, stubborn and all kinds of wonderful in ways that words could never quite capture. The woman who taught me to live again.
My Lilah, who gave me so much, and yet kept from me a secret that she knew would break my heart.
My name is Callum Roberts, and this is our story.
Me Without You is a book to make you smile, bring you to tears and remind you to hold on tightly to those you love.
What I Say:
I would like to thank Bookouture, Kim Nash and Kelly Rimmer for sending me a copy of this book in exchange for a fair and honest review.
Lilah and Callum meet on the ferry, after Lilah flirts with Callum, the chemistry is on show between the two instantly.
I like both main characters, especially Lilah her actions show how much she really loved Callum.  I also loved how the book was written from Callum's point of view, so very often a stroy is written from the woman's point of view this was refreshingly different.
I really like that the book was set somewhere totally different and Kelly really described Australia in so much detail that you felt you where there with the characters, especially the night they first meet when Lilah takes Callum to the beach.
I laughed and cried in equal measure at this story. It is a beautiful, tragic love story that has you glued from page one. I don't want to go into too much detail but this really is a heartbreakingly beautiful story.
5 out of 5 stars
About The Author

When Kelly's childhood friends grew out of make-believe games, she realised she'd have to become a writer (or join the real world with them, but that seemed far too dull).
Several decades later, she lives in rural Australia with her husband Daniel and their two young children, and when she’s not reading, writing, or daydreaming about reading and writing, she has one of those unfathomable IT jobs which no one outside of the industry really knows about.

Chapter One

It was absolutely not love at first sight.
I saw a filthy bare foot out of the corner of my eye. I tried not to look, but facts
are facts—bare feet in public places are inexcusable, and at that point I hadn’t realised what the body the foot was attached to was like. I’m sure I grimaced, but I did try to keep my eyes on the laptop I was working on. Evidently I failed because she caught me staring.
‘My eyes are up here,’ she said, but she sounded amused and I glanced up to see if I’d misread the tone.
That’s how we made eye contact. And that’s when I fell in love with her—so maybe it was actually love at second sight.
Lilah was all kinds of wonderful, in ways words could never quite capture. She was barely five feet tall and so skinny it seemed she’d break if you held her too tightly. That day, her deep auburn hair was in a glossy bun without a single flyaway and I remember thinking of the joke I’d heard about corporate types thinking hair that moved was a sign
of weakness. Lilah somehow knew how to wear a plum suit with chunky wooden accessories and still appear flawlessly professional.
There was something so wrong with the polished top half of her image juxtaposing the homeless-esque foot situation. Although I was embarrassed to have been caught staring, I just had to ask.
‘Why aren’t you wearing shoes?’

Interview with Rosie Blake

Today I would like to welcome Rosie Blake on Cometbabesbooks

My interview with Rosie Blake

Hi Rosie

Thank you for coming on Cometbabesbooks today.

Can you tell us about How to get a (Love)life?

It's the story of Nicola Brown, an uptight and introverted young woman who has never had a date on Valentine’s Day. Following a bet with a work colleague, Nicola has to put aside her hang ups to go on as many dates as she possibly can in order to find the perfect man in time for February 14th. Cue some very dodgy men, some appalling dating advice from friends and family and let the fun commence...

Are any of the dating experiences based on your own experience?

Only one and it is of course... Chris. The man who made me rate photographs of himself over dinner and then wrote my favourite photos down in his little book. Bad times.

If your book was made into a film, who would you like as the main characters?

Robert Downey Jnr, George Clooney and Johnny Depp. So fine there aren't parts for them all yet but I could TOTALLY adapt the screenplay to include them... Right?

Can you tell us anything about your next book?

I love it! I'm half-way through the first draft and she has just been chased across a jungle by monkeys on a tiny island in Malaysia. She is tracking down the man she married, aged 8, in the school playground as she believes if she had stayed married to Andrew Parker her life might have turned out alright...

What kind of books do you like to read?

All sorts. Crime, thrillers, women's fiction, 'Book Club' reads - pretty much anything bar Sci-Fi or Heroic Fantasy. And some might even qualify. I just love reading about brilliant characters in exciting settings.

How old were you when you started writing?

I started writing in earnest after university. I was working in television and got more and more obsessed with the writing not the TV work.

What books did you read as a child and were there any that inspired you to take up writing?

The Faraway Tree by Enid Blyton was my favourite novel as a child. I loved that world - the lands up the tree, being best mates with Silky and MoonFace. Then when I was a teenager it was Jilly Cooper who first introduced me to really funny writing. That woman is a genius.

Are there any new authors that have grabbed your interest?

Yes! Holly Martin and 'Willow Cottage' has been my most recent find - a gorgeous, warm, witty read.

What do you like to do when you're not writing?

Make cocktails, walk by the river, read, eat cake, catch up with friends, hang out with my husband and play very bad golf.

Do you like it quiet when you're writing or do you need background noise?(music or TV)

I have selective hearing so can't tell either way. I just block things out so I can write when a film is on and realise I have no idea what has happened on the screen.

What is your favourite book and why?

TOO HARD A QUESTION NO FAIR.
OK. Well from a comedy point of view I would probably have to go with 'Yes man' by Danny Wallace or 'Are you Experienced' by William Sutcliffe. Both made me LOL. Big time.

Can you share with us a day in the life of Rosie Blake?

If I'm not working then I start the day with a book in the bath and a cup of tea on the side.
Then I dry my hair, bemoan the state of my house and throw my IPAD and book in a bag and leave.
Then I head to my favourite cafe, order a Chai tea Latte, some kind of cake and write with the bustle around me.
Then I might go home, bemoan the state of my house and go for a walk along the river.
Then I might decide to badly mangle dinner for my husband and make Singapore Slings to drink in the garden.
Then when dinner has burnt I might persuade him to go out for dinner or get a takeaway.

Winner.

Thanks again.

Jo xx

About Rosie Blake

Rosie likes baked items, taking long walks by the river and speaking about herself in the third person.

Interview with Julie Shackman

Today I would like to welcome Julie Shackman on to my blog.

Hi Julie

Welcome to Cometbabesbooks!

How old were you when you started writing?
I actually started writing stories when I was about nine or ten! I used to buy cheap exercise jotters from Woolworths.
Who are your favourite writers?
There are many writers I admire but my favourites are Wendy Holden; Jenny Colgan; Sophie Kinsella and Nick Spalding.

What books did you read as a child?
I used to love the Mallory Towers books by Enid Blyton. I couldn't read them quickly enough.

What is Your favourite book and why?
It has to be "Who's Afraid of Mr Wolfe?" by Hazel Osmond. It's full of passion, laughter and emotion. It left me breathless at times and I had to keep reading.

Do you have a favourite place you like to write and why?
I usually find coffee shops are a good place for me. I like music, bustle and noise. I tend to be easily distracted if I try to write at home, so I definitely get more writing done if I'm somewhere with a latte!

What inspired you to take up writing?
I've always loved books and storytelling. I trained as a journalist and had two childrens' picture books published years ago, but it has always been the romance genre that I've wanted to read and write.

Are any of your characters based on people you know?
Maybe small traits but not anything major. I like to try and create my characters from scratch.

What items are on your desk/where you write?
I have lots of pens; pretty notebooks and a miniature of the gorgeous Richard Armitage as Thorin, which my Husband bought me for Christmas. If I had the real thing, I'd never get any work done...!

Do you have a routine for your writing?
I try to get started first thing, once my two sons are off to school. Then I attempt to do as much as I can before they get home. After that, I tend not to get too much writing done until the next day.

Any tips for writers who are just starting out?
Read as much as you can, especially in the genre you write in. I think it's a great way to polish your writing and see where you can improve or tweak things. Also, I know it's a cliche but don't give up! I truly believe if you want it badly enough, that is half the battle.

Can you share a sneak peak at what you're working on at the moment?
I've just finished writing my second novel (rom-com) about what happens when the so-called "ordinary" collides with "celebrity" and am polishing that at the moment. I've also just started doing some research for my third novel (also a rom-com) which features a well-known historical figure.

What do you like to do when you're not writing?
I love listening to music (especially rock); going for long walks; reading and watching rom-com movies.

Do you like it quiet when you're writing or do you need background noise?(music or TV)
I need music on and make sure the radio is turned up loud. That's why I like the coffee shops I go to, as they usually play good music and it seems to help me write.

If one of your books was made into a film/TV series, who would you like as the leading lady/man?
For Stevie, my ghostly rock star, someone like Santiago Cabrera would be perfect - a twinkle in his eye and bags of charisma. Matt would have to be played by Bradley Cooper. Sexy, wolf-like and with lots of presence. Matt is supposed to have a brush of Bradley about him. As for Ruby, somebody passionate and lovely like Natalie Portman.

Non book questions

Favourite holiday place?
Italy. I love the people, the food and the scenery.

Favourite food?
Italian - again!

What kind of music do you listen to?
I love rock music. My favourite band is Fleetwood Mac. I also like listening to artists like Bon Jovi; Stevie Nicks; Kate Bush, Thea Gilmore and Lissie.

Favourite film?
Seven Brides For Seven Brothers.

Favourite Chocolate?
The darker and nuttier the better!

Favourite drink?
I don't really drink but like the occasional glass of white wine.

Thanks for this great interview Jo!

Thanks for taking the time to answer my questions.

Jo xx

Julie’s book Rock my World is out now, look out for my review coming soon.

About Rock My World

Ruby Cameron is an ambitious reporter for a local paper where she is fed scraps of news, and lives with a man whose “idea of living dangerously is to leave the heating on when we pop out to the shops”. But after catching her squeaky clean boyfriend in flagrante delicto she ups sticks and moves into her own small home, only to discover the ghostly presence of a cheeky rock star who becomes her confidant as the dynamics of her small town, and her feelings about her dashing new boss, begin to throw up more questions than she can answer. Will Ruby discover who she really is, and perhaps more importantly, who she wants to be?

About The Author
Like so many other writers, my journey to publication has been a long and varied one!

I initially trained as a journalist but I always wanted to write contemporary romance.

I had two children’s picture books published some years ago, as well as a few poems in anthologies. Life sometimes gets in the way though, so the idea of writing novels went on the backburner.

After our two sons grew a bit older, I found more time again to indulge in my love of reading and that was when I knew I had to try and write contemporary romance.

Whenever I got the opportunity, I put pen to paper and then when I finished my novel and polished it, I started firing it off to literary agents and publishers. That was when the fun really started!

This went on for a number of months. I received a few full MS requests and lots of positive comments generally, which was great – but nobody was biting.
Then just before Christmas, I read about the dynamic (!) London based digital publishers Not So Noble Books, who were considering new authors.

I submitted a query, synopsis and first three chapters and got a reply from them several days later. They said they enjoyed my writing and asked to read the full MS.

I sent it off straight away and tried not to get too excited. I even attempted to forget about it, which is easier said than done. But to my shock and delight, about two weeks before Christmas, I received an e-mail from NSNB, offering me a publishing contract.

I remember hyperventilating and then asking my eldest son to read out the e-mail to make sure it wasn’t just wishful thinking!

Cover Reveal - Locks Rapunzel Unhinged by Sarah J Pepper

What They Say:

Gunned down by the hottest killer in the history of the Badass Archives wasn’t exactly Rapunzel’s end-game. But when her reputable extraction skills fail, she uses unorthodox methods to gain her freedom from the Mercenary, whose icy blue eyes have serious panty-dropping capabilities. Even though most girls wouldn’t fall for their would-be assassin, Rapunzel isn’t like most dames. Her major girl-boner for the Mercenary is so pathetically intense it verges on cliché.

Regardless, Rapunzel’s hands are tied. Love chooses its victims, not the other way around. She isn’t the stereotypical Damsel in Distress. Her Bad-Boy Prince Charming is a renowned mercenary, and her “Happy Ending” plays out like a bad movie. However, she is determined to find her freedom—love be damned—and she’ll do it in a fabulous pair of heels.

About The Author:

I specialize in dark, paranormal romance – think “happy ever after” but with a twisted, dark chocolate center. Real-life romance isn't only filled with hugs, kisses, bunnies, and rainbows. True-love can be more thoroughly described in times of darkness and tribulation. It’s in those harsh moments where you see what a person is truly capable of – both the good and bad. Sometimes prince-charming isn't always on time, and the glass slipper is a little snug. However, it doesn't mean Charming is not Mr. Right, and who says every shoe is the perfect fit?

Here Come The Boys by Milly Johnson

What They Say:

An exclusive ebook short story from top ten bestseller, Milly Johnson. Also includes a sneak peek of her new novel The Teashop on the Corner.

Angie Silverton and her husband are taking a much-needed holiday on the cruise ship Mermaidia, so the last person she hopes to bump into is her one-time best friend Selina who stole the love of her life and married him twenty years ago.

And what she needs even less is to be marooned in Malaga with Selina when both of them manage to miss boarding the ship in port.

It will take three days for them to travel across Europe to catch up with the ship again in Croatia. And in the company of each other twenty-four/seven, a lot of old baggage is going to be unloaded.

Praise for Milly Johnson:

'Bursting with warmth and joie de vivre' JILL MANSELL

'Warm, optimistic and romantic' KATIE FFORDE

'An irresistibly feel-good read' JANE COSTELLO

What I Say:

I know I don’t always mention the cover of a book but I loved this cover, just as much as I loved the story.

We meet Angie as she is about to go on a cruise with her husband, although she loves him, she can’t help seeing her first love Zander through rose tinted glasses, as he was stolen from her by her then best friend Selina.

Milly has a mix of wonderful characters in this short story and you get to know a little bit about them all  even down to the annoying couple you always manage to meet on holiday and I'm so glad he was told where to get off.  Angie accidentally
misses the boat in Malaga and unbeknownst to her so has Selina, the story follows their journey, not only back to the ship but to discoveries about each other and their friendship.  This is a lovely heartwarming story, as sometimes this grass isn’t always greener on the other side.

I found this a thoroughly feel good read and was sad but also happy when it ended, as I said before would love a longer version of this book.  I can’t wait to start the next book of Milly’s The Teashop on the Corner.

The Heart of Bali by Rebecca Raisin

What They Say:

What happens when your break from real life shows you exactly how empty it actually is?

Focused and driven, Aurora has built her PR and event management company into a thriving success. But, it’s come at a cost. Her relationships suffer, and she has virtually no social life. When her boyfriend suggests a holiday to mend the bridges, it seems like a good idea to rekindle their attraction and make some new life choices. Instead, she finds herself in the tropical paradise of Bali, heartbroken and alone.

When Marcel, the hotelier, offers to show her the real Bali, she doesn’t hesitate — he might be just the pick-me-up she needs. Pinning Marcel as a Casanova, Aurora decides to have fun and not overthink things. Exploring her more sensual side brings a newfound confidence, and she finds herself falling for the French hotelier and the Bali he shows her...until an unexpected visitor arrives at the hotel.

As her holiday draws to a close, will Aurora choose to leave with good memories, or follow her heart?

What I Say:

I would like to say I love Rebecca's books and when I saw this being reviewed by another book blogger, I just had to go on Amazon and purchase. It definitely was a bargain.

We first meet Aurora when she is sat by the beautifully described pool in Bali, but for Aurora there is a sadness at being there, she is alone after her boyfriend lets her down at the airport and doesn't turn up for their flight.  She is then told by a friend there are photos on his Facebook page.

Here she meets Marcel the French owner of the hotel she is staying in, deciding to go with the flow and have a holiday fling, there's definitely sparks between them and Rebecca has written some of the steamiest sex scenes I have read in a book.  I won't be able to look at a limo the same again.

Rebecca writes an easily likeable female character and her hero in Marcel is hot hot hot, especially when Auroras ex turnes up, to say I wanted Marcel to punch him was an understatement.

A great story set in a wonderful location, again Rebecca takes you to places you would love to visit, go out and buy this brilliant story.

Orion's Gift by Anneli Purchase

What They Say:

While camping in the exotic landscape of Mexico’s Baja Peninsula, Kevin and Sylvia, both on the run from abusive relationships, meet and fall in love.

Two things stand in the way of their happiness.

One—the secrets they keep from each other.
Two—their abusers hunting them down.

Will fear drive them apart or will passion and trust surmount the violence and hostility they have endured?

What I Say:

I would like to thank Loveahappyending Magazine for sending me a copy of this book in exchange for a fair and honest review.

Kevin and Sylvia meet in Mexico, having escaped partners that neither where happy with, but this wouldn’t be a book if love ran so smooth…

As their budding romance is building, they are then faced with the people that made their life hell, can they survive against the odds and make their romance last?

I liked how the chapters switched between the characters and loved seeing things from each point of view.  It takes you to a different location and is very discriptive.

Maybe it is me, as I have been struggling with what I read and sometimes a book just doesn’t grab you the same.  Enjoyable as this books was.
