What Happens to Men When They Move to Manhattan?

When you live in the fastest moving city on earth, how do you decide-
What is worth the chase?

Life in the city gives 23 year old Amalia Hastings a ride she is not expecting... As she tries to find her way on the little island that never sleeps, she discovers she has a harder time navigating through life then she does the streets of Greenwich Village!

Amalia thought she had everything she wanted – a new apartment in Manhattan, a first-rate education at NYU, a group of fabulous friends and Nicholas, a boyfriend who she once believed was her soul-mate. But somehow, it isn’t enough.

Stumbling through her relationships, Amalia encounters Michael. An attractive classmate who quickly moves from being one of her close friends, to an inconsistent friend-with-benefits. After all, the only thing consistent about New York is its beauty.

Amalia is essentially torn between two men, and Michael is torn between two women. Her best friend Cassandra is being strung along by her "boyfriend", Bryce, and even her friend Olivia is having a secret relationship!

After getting hopelessly lost searching for love in all the wrong places, Amalia finds herself asking – what happens to men when they move to Manhattan?!
Interview with Jill Knapp

Hi Jill

Thank you for coming on Comet Babes Books.

Can you please tell us about your book?
My book was originally self-published and titled Chase. I had in on the market for about 6 months until I was fortunate enough to sign my novel over to Harper Impulse. I have signed a 3 book deal with them and What Happens To Men When They Move To Manhattan? (Formerly known as Chase) is book #1 in a 3 book series I am working on.

The book takes place in New York Series and focuses on the life of Amalia Hastings and her two close friends Cassandra DeLuca and Olivia Davis. Amalia is a twenty-something woman who is stumbling through Mahattan trying to balance grad school with her relationships (both romantic and friendly).

Can you tell us more about Amalia?  Is she based on anyone you know or little bits of people you know?
Amalia is a 23 year old young woman who is a little crazy, but has a good heart. She had a very strict upbringing, and is now letting lose in Manhattan because of it. She gets her heart broken time and time again, but is lucky enough to have a great best friend who at the very least tries to cheer her up. She drinks a bit too much, and has a little too much fun, but throughout the book you see her grow and more importantly grow-up. She is based on bits and pieces of a lot of people I have known in NY. So are all of the other characters.

How did it feel when you were signed by the wonderful Harper Impulse team?
It felt fantastic. I am very lucky to be working with such a brilliant team of writers.

What are your future book plans?
I finished the first draft of the second book in my series, but do not yet have a release date for it. The goal is to have it out by fall 2014.

I read on Huffington post, that you taught and competed in figure skating, would you consider writing a book based around fictional figure skater?
I have thought about that, so the answer is yes. BUT I haven’t skated in such a long time that I would definitely need to do some research on the topic beforehand to make sure I get the technical side of it completely accurate. Competitive skating has changed quite a bit since my day.

Where is your favourite place to write and why?
My favorite places to write are in my kitchen or outside on my little balcony. It’s very hot hear in North Carolina, so lately all of my writing has been done in-doors!

Who/what inspired you to take up writing?
It was something I always wanted to do and one day I literally said to myself- enough with saying you’re going to write a book and start writing one!

Have you ever heard a strange/different story that you thought would be great in a book?
I have, and I actually wrote a book about it. It’s a Middle Grade Fantasy novel called Golem Glam about a 12 year old girl who is actually a Golem. I am currently shopping that manuscript around with the hopes someone will publish it!

What do you like to do when you're not writing?
When I’m not writing, I like to sing (I take singing lessons) and I love to just be outside anyway I can. The beach is definitely my favorite thing in the world so if I had it my way, I’d be planted in the sand with a good book to read every day of my life!

Do you have a process for planning your books? Ie do you talk over an idea with a friend or a partner?
I did in the past, but no not anymore. I am actually pretty private when it come to my writing now. I don’t let anyone see it until it’s finished! (apart from my editor, of course)

Thank you for taking the time to answer my questions.

Jo xx
