Just One More Day by Jessica Blair

A sweeping, epic love story set within the dramatic background of the second world war . . .

What They Say:

When Britain declares war on Germany in 1939, Carolyn Maddison is still a schoolgirl. Her elder brother Alastair wastes no time in joining the RAF as a flying officer, and Carolyn decides that when she is eighteen she will follow him into the service by joining the Women's Auxiliary Air Force.

While reporting to the Air Ministry in London she meets a good-looking, charismatic pilot, Charlie Wade, currently employed in propaganda work. He believes that with her calm demeanor and resilience, Carolyn should work as an Intelligence officer, and suggests she serve on an active bombing station. At her side throughout the courses and postings that follow is Lucy Gaston, naturally quick-witted and sparky, a perfect foil for her friend.

The young WAAFs both obtain prestigious postings in 5 Group Bomber Command, where they perform the vital tasks of briefing and debriefing aircrew returning from operations over Germany. Lucy, an incorrigible optimist, falls head over heels for a member of a Lancaster bomber crew while Carolyn resists her feelings for its dashing pilot. She decides it's not worth the risk of loving a man in wartime. . . only to wonder if she has done the right thing when a new WAAF on the station sets her cap at him.

For Lucy and Carolyn, life on a WWII bombing station brings drama, heartbreak and suspense in this touching love story.

What I Say:

I would like to thank Clara Diaz for sending me a copy of this book in exchange for a fair and honest review.

To start with I love anything to do with history especially the war year, whether it is fiction or fact.  I love to watch history programmes and read history stories.  When I was offered this by Clara I couldn't wait to read it.

Carolyn is a young girl when war is declared and her brother joins the RAF.  As soon as she is old enough she follows her brother to war and joins the WAAF.  Here she becomes friends with Lucy.

The story is set around life at a bombing station and it’s the girls jobs to debrief the crew when they return from raids.  At times this is very touching and sad.  It is sad to think what they had to go through and what happened during WWII

It was obvious that Jessica had done her research not only about the war and life in a bombing station, but also about the area the book is set.  She made what could be the most boring part of the job interesting to read about.   It's a story not only about the war and how it changes life, but about the people.  Set to the back drop of a love story.

What They Say:
The little old lady is back! Martha Andersson and the League of Pensioners have left behind their dreary care home in Stockholm and headed for the bright lights of Las Vegas.

But before long they are up to their old tricks and with ingenious tactics, a pair of false teeth and a wheelchair each, they plot to outwit the security system at one of the biggest casinos. However, they aren't the only ones planning on stealing bucket loads of cash and soon find themselves pitted against a gang of dangerous criminals.

Can the group of elderly friends work together to outsmart the younger robbers and get away with their biggest heist yet? Or will this job be a step too far for The League of Pensioners?

What I Say:

I would like to thank Natasha Harding for sending me a copy of this book in exchange for a fair and honest review.

I read this as before reading the first novel, The Little Old Lady Who Broke all the Rules and although I really enjoyed this I wish I had read the first book beforehand.

Martha and her League of Pensioners are in Las Vagas out to cause chaos. Martha is a criminal mastermind and the brilliant plans she comes up with are great. I also love that these books are set around the older generation.

The pensioner’s however are very forgetful and this causes some very comic moments. The book is a great fun read and I can’t wait to read the first book in the series.

Excerpt

I nod and study each of them, until my glance lands on Golden Boy. I narrow my eyes, glaring at him in the scariest way I can muster. At least, I hope so anyway.
He stares back, the earlier smile completely vanished. He jumps to his feet and saunters forward. I gulp, feeling uncertainty stirring in the pit of my stomach, and my palms sweat from nerves. I don’t know if it’s because of his godly good looks, the fact he’s towering well over six feet on my five foot seven inches height, or because I can’t read his all too calming features, but suddenly, I feel like coming over here wasn’t my best idea.
I watch him as he approaches, slow and confident, like a lion unconcerned by the presence of a cheetah. His pressed, white button-up shirt stretches across his chest, and the loose tie around his neck hangs over his unbuttoned collar. His expression is stoic, but there’s something in his hazel eyes that makes me feel awkward and on display. He doesn’t exactly scream “bad boy,” but I know there’s something in him that sizzles just under the surface, a wildness.
He runs his fingers over his perfectly-combed, golden locks and extends his hand for a handshake, the tendons on his forearm popping below his rolled up sleeve. I stare at his arm and blink.
“Pleasure to meet you,” he says. His voice is incredibly warm, amused.
When I look up at him, his lips stretch wide in a wicked grin that shines right to his eyes. I feel light on my feet, like I’m on cloud nine or something.
“Hudson, Blake. Blake, Hudson,” Hope introduces us, reminding me that we aren’t alone.
“Blake,” Hudson says, like he’s tasting my name on his tongue. “That’s an odd name for a girl. Don’t you think, Hope?”
That brings me back to earth and lands me on my butt—figuratively speaking, of course.
“Hudson!” Hope squeals disapprovingly, backhanding him across his chest.
I glare sharply at him, thinning my lips. “Remember this moment, Golden Boy. Because karma is mighty pissed, and she pays back with interest.”
I don’t give either of them a chance to respond before I pivot and head back toward my teammates.
Wesley meets me halfway and leans down, asking, “What did you say to them? He looks like he got hit by lightning.”
I throw a glance over my shoulder and smile at the stunned expression on Hudson’s face. Good. When I turn back to Wesley, the rest of the team has caught up to us. “It’s time to bring out the big guns. You guys up for it?”
Murmurs fill the air, almost all in agreement, until Wesley speaks.
“We can’t risk getting caught, Blake.”
I grin. “Oh, trust me, there’s no way we’re getting caught.”
Excitement fizzles around us as the team starts tothrow out ideas. Golden Boy and the other stuck-up douche-nuts won’t know what hit them.

S.C.A.R.S by Julia Ibbotson

What They Say

Dragons, knights and a boy who slips through a tear in the fabric of the universe into a fantasy medieval world …

Gavin is an ordinary boy with problems like everyone else, when he finds himself in an extraordinary situation and facing the fight of his life.  People are calling him Gawain and sending him on a medieval quest.  How has he found himself on a horse when he has never ridden one before? How come he has a sword in his hand and terrifying creatures bearing down upon him? He seems to have slipped through into another universe. But can he win the battle of Good against Evil, and can he save the land of Unor   ̶   and more importantly, can he save himself?

PLEASE NOTE: This is a children’s novel.

What I Say
I would like to thank Deb at Brooks Cottage Books for sending me a copy of this book in exchange for a fair and honest review.

I was aware when starting this book that it is aimed at the younger audience, but I didn't mind as I have read other books that are.  I would say this is aimed at possible the 10-15 age range rather than the YA that I usually read.  This however didn't detract from my enjoyment of the book.  It is a wonderful fantasy read that easily gets the reader caught up.

Gavin is a lovely character who is being bullied at school and uses books as his escape, especially tales of King Arthur and his medieval knights.

One night, Gavin hears his name called on the wind, this leads him into a world where his is Gawain a Knight who must fight to save the land of Unor from evil.

This is a magical story that had me turning page after page, dying to know what happens next, so I can imagine what a younger reader would make of it.  Julia creates a magical world full of knights and dragons, good and evil.  This is just perfect to engage the younger audience into a fantasy land.  The story is fast enough paced to keep anyone glued to it.

I still can’t believe that Julia wrote this story while still at school and it has sat in her attic for forty years, I’m so glad that she dug it out and decided to release it.

Eclipse excerpt:
Chapter One

‘Run,’ cried the Watcher. ‘They’re coming again.’
The cobblestones shifted under them and several of the soldiers lost their footing.
‘Run!’ cried the Faemir again, and Hrulth led the charge towards the Maelir stronghold. All around them, buildings were collapsing in the darkness. Cluric had sheathed his sword to allow himself to run more freely. Somehow he knew instinctively that if this came to a fight, he would be lost.
Horrific bellowing noises, which he knew from bitter experience were grale, filled the night sky. This time they were accompanied by a droning undercurrent that was totally unfamiliar. Cluric didn’t look back. He kept his eyes on the street, watching for the potholes and chasms that opened up in his path.
The Maelir barricades were in sight now. Cluric saw the torches burning in front of him. More bellows vaulted into the sky, and he felt his shoulder aching as he ran.
Not far to go, he muttered, as he felt himself dropping behind the others. Not far to go.
The street under his feet buckled and he fell.
‘Cluric!’ Hrulth called.
‘I’m all right. Go ahead.’ But Hrulth was already by his side, helping him up.
‘Are you hurt?’ asked Hrulth.
‘I think I bruised my knee,’ said Cluric, ‘but I can still put my weight on it. Come on.’
They dashed for the Maelir stronghold, aware that just behind them, Dusk creatures were pouring out of the ground and into the streets of Peleusar.
The rest of the patrol cheered as the pair finally reached the barricades.
‘You are fools,’ cried the Faemir Watcher. ‘This is only the beginning. Get the fires started. It’s the only thing that will stop them.’
Hrulth spoke frantically to the other battalion leaders and the orders to start fires were given.
As Cluric stared out into the blackness, he could see blood-red eyes moving like disembodied spectres through the alleys of Peleusar. The Faemir Watcher, the hated enemy, stood next to him, and he felt her fear.
‘You are the first Faemir I’ve ever seen who was afraid,’ he said.
She looked at him, shivering. ‘Am I also the first Faemir you’ve seen without a weapon in her hand?’
Cluric nodded.
‘Then I don’t see why you’re so surprised.’
‘You said you were attacked by something worse than grale and Dusk-rats,’ said Cluric. ‘What is it that terrifies you so much?’
The Watcher closed her eyes as if she was trying to ward off a vision, and uttered a single word: ‘Wraiths.’

Excerpt

“I’m going for a swim.”
Eloise barely had time to register those words before Cavanaugh was stripping off his charcoal fleece, tugging the dark t-shirt he wore beneath off with it too. He dropped them on top of his pack and she stared at him, unable to drag her eyes away as they slowly glided down over the hard slabs of his pectorals to the ropes of his stomach.
An ache started low in her belly and only got worse as he tugged off his walking boots, pulled off his socks, and unbuttoned his dark grey trousers. He pushed them down, revealing long toned legs, and stepped out of them, his muscles shifting with the action, mesmerising her.
He truly was a majestic male.
For a moment, she feared he would crush her strength to resist him by stripping completely, but he turned away from her, his black trunks still in place. They hugged the twin globes of his backside as he walked and she stared at them, loving the way they dimpled and flexed with each stride he took towards the water.
When he looked back at her, she dropped her gaze to her pack.
She felt his eyes leave her and lifted hers back to him, drinking in the sight of him. He waded into the water and barked out a sharp noise that echoed around the lush green valley and the mountains beyond.
“Fuck, that’s freezing.” He didn’t turn around as she had expected. He shuddered and kept wading out into the river, his shoulders hunched up and fingers flexing at his sides.
She smiled.
And hid it when he looked back at her.
He grinned, his grey eyes bright with it, a light she hadn’t seen in them for a long time. Too long. This was the gorgeous male she had grown up with, always an air of mischief surrounding him, a sense that he was going to live his life to the fullest and take every adventure in his stride.
Seeing him like it again only made her feel worse about making him return to the pride with her and only made it hit home how much he had changed when he had become their alpha. She had never thought he would smile again as he was now, full of energy and happiness. She had never thought she would see the Cavanaugh who had been her best friend, her closest companion, and so much more than that.
For her at least.
She studied him, spotting all the changes that she had failed to notice, ones that were startlingly clear to her now and told her that things had been hard for Cavanaugh at the village after he had become their alpha. She could see now how much it had weighed on him and she cursed herself for being so wrapped up in her own hurt to notice his struggle. Her heart whispered that it wasn’t only his duties as alpha that had made life at the pride hard for him and she tried to ignore it, afraid to listen to it and believe that his struggle had in part been because they had been separated and couldn’t be together.
She refused to get caught up in that fantasy.
She refused to surrender to her pressing need to question him too, because she feared the answers he might give her.
He bravely dipped lower in the water, kicked off and began to swim in the deepest part of the river, entrancing her as he ducked his head under the cold water and surfaced again. He slicked his silver-white hair back and rivulets ran down his sculpted cheeks and rolled along the strong line of his jaw. He still made her heart beat hard and still drew her to him even though her memories of him were tainted by everything that had come afterwards.
The women.
The warmth that had been building inside her stuttered and died, leaving her ice cold.
Cavanaugh swam towards her, but his smile no longer affected her. The sight of him no longer made her want to rush into his arms and listen to his deep voice as he told her stories of the outside world. The pain of watching him from a distance for five long years crushed that need and the pain of being separated from him and everything she had endured destroyed her softer feelings.
“Join me, Eloise,” he hollered, his smile widening. “It’s not bad once you get used to it.”
“No.” That word came out far colder than she had intended and he frowned at her, his smile disappearing as he stopped swimming.
She looked away from him, unable to bear seeing the hurt as it crossed his face, tearing at her. She hadn’t meant to reject him so cruelly. It had been wrong of her, and not because he was her alpha and she had been disrespectful. It had been wrong of her to hurt him when deep inside she had wanted to take him up on his offer.
She wanted to swim with him, but she couldn’t shake the memories that were bombarding her, replays of the five years she had watched him from a distance as he had acted as their alpha.
She couldn’t shake the flashes of the women who had been all over him, seeking his attention.
Eloise pressed her hands to her chest as her heart hurt and tears threatened to fill her eyes. She sniffed them back, unwilling to let them fall. She had spilled enough tears in her life over everything that had happened. She was done with them now. She was stronger than the woman she had been, the one shaped by events she’d had no control over.
The one who had been torn apart every night when Cavanaugh had gone to his house, a trail of women following him.
It was the right of pride alphas to take their pick from among the females of status, satisfying as many partners as took their fancy. The females vied for the attention of their alpha because sharing his bed might elevate them into the role of his sole female.
Cavanaugh had never chosen one from the many. His father had been like that too, bedding numerous females, never settling on one.
His father had even slept with the females without status, the ones who could never be selected as his sole female.
Her gaze sought Cavanaugh and tracked him as he swam away from her, the distance between them eating at her. How many females had he bedded in the five years he had served as their alpha?
How many more would he sleep with after he returned to that role?
He would return to it. He had no choice. He would become their true alpha again when he set foot in the village, and she would go back to her quiet life, away from the pride. As much as it hurt her, it was how things had to be. She wasn’t bringing him back for her sake. She was doing it for the pride.
Eloise watched him, a deep need growing inside her again, one that she struggled to deny.
Asking Cavanaugh for the truth about how many women he had slept with and whether he had ever cared about her would only end with her being hurt again. She wasn’t strong enough, wasn’t brave enough to lay her heart on the line like that. Her stomach rebelled at the vision of him looking her right in the eye and telling her that he had bedded the females and that she had meant nothing to him, that what had happened between them had been nothing more than satisfying a biological need for him.
She wasn’t strong enough right now to hear that. Seeing him again, speaking to him for the first time in almost a decade, and being close to him had her muddled and off balance, liable to fall apart and make a fool of herself.
Cavanaugh began swimming back towards her and the resolve she had mustered crumbled again. She trembled on the brink of casting aside all the rules and swimming with him. Part of her demanded she seized this moment with him, before he was taken from her again, but the rest warned that it would only make things worse. Giving herself to him again now would make seeing him with other females unbearable. The knowledge that he could again take something precious and special and treat it as if it was nothing would destroy her.
His gaze swung her way and his expression suddenly went cold.
“Eloise!” He shoved out of the water, spraying it everywhere and startling her.
He rushed across the wet rocks, his footing sure as he sprinted towards her, leaping with agile grace from one boulder to the next, his muscles working hard as he closed the distance between them.
Her eyes widened and she turned slowly, her heart thundering against her breast and cold prickles crawling over the nape of her neck.
She wasn’t alone.
Her eyes met the huge tiger’s ones as it stalked towards her from the edge of the forest, already close enough to pounce.

In her books, she creates detailed worlds, twisting plots, mind-blowing action, intense emotion and heart-stopping romances with leading men that vary from dark deadly vampires to sexy shape-shifters and wicked werewolves, to sinful angels and hot demons! If you're a fan of paranormal romance authors Lara Adrian, J R Ward, Sherrilyn Kenyon, Gena Showalter and Christine Feehan then you will enjoy her books too.
If you love your angels a little dark and wicked, the best-selling Her Angel series is for you. If you like strong, powerful, and dark vampires then try the Vampires Realm series or any of her stand-alone vampire romance books. If you’re looking for vampire romances that are sinful, passionate and erotic then try the best-selling Vampire Erotic Theatre series. Or if you prefer huge detailed worlds filled with hot-blooded alpha males in every species, from elves to demons to dragons to shifters and angels, then take a look at the new Eternal Mates series.
